Introducing Serco-NedRailways

Serco-NedRailways’ core philosophy is to improve services in a way that offers value for money to clients. We know that we only exist to serve our customers, and that delivery is critically dependent on the quality of our employees. As such we are an organisation which is intrinsically focused on people and relationships. However, we also recognise the financial challenges facing governments, and as such our services are not only designed to offer a high quality experience to passengers but to be affordable and attractive to the taxpayer. In ensuring that we deliver on both these aims to the greatest extent possible,

Serco-NedRailways always seeks to build productive relationships with passengers, communities and funders. This allows us to establish what people want from our services and to position them in a way that attracts financial support for improvements from a wide variety of sources.

The Serco-NedRailways joint venture already operates two rail companies in the UK where these principles have been applied successfully. Since 2003 we have managed the 25-year Merseyrail concession, which is recognised as one of the best performing train operators in the UK.
In 2004 we were awarded the Northern Rail franchise, which is the largest in the UK, covering 2,800km of track and serving over 180,000 passengers per day.

The Serco-NedRailways joint venture is no short-term marriage of convenience. Our team has quickly established itself as a force for improving the quality and value offered by public transport, and one which is passionately determined to work hard and to enjoy making a difference. We have adopted the European Foundation of Quality Management's approach to Business Excellence in support of our determination to foster an ethos of continued improvement in all we do.

Serco’s skills and experience

Serco is a FTSE 100 international service company which combines commercial know-how with a deep public service ethos, and has been delivering essential public services for more than 40 years. Serco’s core expertise is improving services by managing people, processes, technology and assets more effectively.
In doing so, we advise policymakers, design innovative solutions and integrate systems so that we deliver to the public as effectively as possible. In line with this mission, Serco has a simple and efficient management structure, with strong and capable leaders supported by an effective governance framework.

Serco has grown to become one of the world’s leading service companies by working in partnership with its customers and staff to manage change smoothly and positively – and pursue continuous improvement relentlessly. We think innovatively to help governments improve services across many areas of public life, from justice to healthcare, education to defence.

Our work ranges from the management of facilities, projects and IT systems, through to the creation of entirely new businesses. This includes the financing, design and build of new facilities, including hospitals and transport systems, as well as their day-to-day operation. We run world-class scientific establishments, provide critical information to manage traffic, maintain buildings, operate railways and detain offenders.

Customer focus is a quality that distinguishes Serco’s service. This is evident at our railway operations on both sides of the world – on the kilometre-long Ghan train, one of three trans-continental services we own and operate in Australia, and on London’s acclaimed Docklands Light Railway.

Our credentials and approach have been fundamental to being awarded the contract to operate the prestigious Dubai Metro system.

NedRailways’s skills and experience

NedRailways is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dutch Railways, the major passenger train operator in the Netherlands and one of the world’s leading railway companies.
In November 2008, NedRailways acquired Czech bus operator Probo Trans Beroun, which runs 120 buses on 70 routes, mainly west of Prague. In December 2008, NedRailways acquired the German public transport operator Abellio, which operates bus and train contracts in various German Federal States.

NedRailways is committed to continuous improvement of its service quality and achieving the highest levels of performance and customer satisfaction. Our focus is on establishing partnerships with our clients and other stakeholders, and helping them to achieve their goals.

NedRailways has a structured programme to exchange best practices between its parent company NS Dutch Railways and its own operations. This ensures active use of the wide range of expertise and experience available within the group of companies, including parent company Dutch Railways and sister company Strukton. NS plays a leading role in developing integrated transport solutions in the Netherlands and Strukton is one of the leading European infrastructure maintenance companies with a strong presence in Scandinavia. Best practice transfer includes fleet maintenance, operational planning and timetabling, and the development and operation of station hubs and retail facilities. Through this programme, all NedRailways’s companies benefit from extensive international experience and deploy best practice from other countries as appropriate.
